If you would like a little help, advice, feedback, or just kind words throughout your alcohol ink painting journey, I'd love to be there for you!
My teaching style is one of praise and accentuating the positives in your painting. Whether you are just starting out (maybe this is your first painting experience ever) or you are an experienced artist developing your alcohol ink painting skills, mentoring can help you reach your goals. As an ink painting instructor for the last 7 years, I've worked with hundreds and hundreds of artists around the world who have created stunning ink paintings (while I can't take credit for their talent and works, I do think that I helped a little - at least in the inspiration!)
For my inks, I work exclusively with alcohol ink on yupo paper. I frame them under glass generally without the use of fixative. While the techniques I teach are transferable to other substrates, I will not be able to guide you regarding tile, metal etc. and how to seal final pieces (very common questions). For the purposes of our mentoring, I would prefer working with artists working on yupo, since this is my area of expertise.
Over the years, I have created over a hundred ink painting demonstration videos. Originally, they were offered through Digital Chalk in subject related courses - Beginning Inks, Florals, Beach, Animals, Landscapes, Butterflies, Pets etc. Currently, the same videos are available on CourseCraft at a lower price point in 4 volumes, with each volume including the entire Beginning Course. While, they are structured for independent learning, the courses will form a useful basis for mentoring.
How this works
1) Sign up for the CourseCraft Volume of your Choice - $29, paid through the CourseCraft site
2) Select either mentoring via email ($30/month) or telephone and email ($100/month) - see details about each option below. If you are just starting out, we should begin with the Beginning Course material. If you are an experienced ink artist, you are welcome to submit paintings showing specific beginning techniques and we can work on the projects of your choice (either from my demos or your own inspiration). Please note that I am not a critiquer of paintings - I strongly believe that ink painting has an infinite variety of beautiful appearances (no right or wrong). My goal is always to help artists develop their style and reach their personal goals.
Like my original Class of One teaching model, this form of mentoring has feedback via email. Artists send emails of their works and any questions that they might have. Usually I answer within the day during the business week. I'm trying to reserve my weekends for family time, but if I'm not camping or traveling, I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
One month should be plenty of time to work through the Beginning Course and create several paintings of your own. I'm also very understanding that the intention to paint doesn't always match with the time to do so. As such, my concept of a month is pretty flexible - just keep me posted! Thanks!
This is a new idea for me - mentoring via the phone (or facetime/whatsapp/etc - audio only). It sounds like fun and I know there are a number of artists who would just like to be able to ask questions in real time. For this mentoring model, we can schedule a mutually convenient time to talk about your paintings (or materials, etc.) once a week for the month. It would be most helpful if you could email me the paintings a day ahead so that I have time to prepare for our conversation. You are also welcome to correspond via email in between sessions. For this program, please email me at email@example.com to be sure that our schedules match for the telephone calls. Thanks!
